Our Mission
Our Vision
Our mission
To provide experiences where the well-being of the horse is at the centre of our interactions.
Our approach
We are a Horse-Centred Riding Centre that supports our clients in developing a deep, mindful connection between them and the horse.
What is horse centred riding?
This philosophy focusing on promoting harmony and mutual understanding between horse and human; focusing on the horse’s needs, emotions, and well-being. In this style of riding, the rider seeks to align their body, mind, and energy with the horse, enabling a more fluid and responsive partnership.
We aim to promote
- Understanding the Horse’s Perspective: to progress as riders we need to interpret the horse’s behaviour, body language, and emotions, fostering empathy and positive communication. The focus is on building trust between the horse and rider, rather than only achieving technical riding skills.
- Softness and Sensitivity: Riders are encouraged to develop a light, sensitive touch. This involves using minimal force and allowing the horse to move freely. It’s about being aware of the horse’s reactions and adjusting accordingly, rather than controlling or forcing the horse into a specific behaviour.
- Balanced Riding: Correct posture and balance are essential. Horse-centred riding emphasises a rider’s ability to sit correctly and in balance, which promotes better movement for both the horse and the rider. The rider’s seat, legs, hands, and mind should work in unison to provide subtle guidance.
- Connection and Timing: The rider is encouraged to work with the horse’s natural rhythm and timing. This means adjusting movements to the horse’s pace and responding to cues without impatience or roughness.
- Mindfulness and Relaxation: Mental focus and relaxation are key components of horse-centred riding. Both the rider and horse need to be calm and present in the moment to build a cooperative relationship.
These skills are not limited to more advanced riders, nor to adult riders alone. It is our belief that when these principles are focused on from the start of the equestrian journey, a solid foundation is laid for progress in whatever direction a rider wishes to take; either competitive or leisure riding.
What are the benefits of this approach to equestrianism?
- Stronger Horse-Rider Bond: This approach fosters a deeper emotional and physical connection between the rider and the horse.
- Improved Rider Skills: As riders become more attuned to the horse’s responses, they improve their own awareness, timing, and balance.
- Happier Horses: Horses that are handled with sensitivity and understanding are often more relaxed and willing.
What Techniques and Exercises are used?
- Mindful Riding: Riders learn to stay present and responsive to the horse’s needs, avoiding rigid or mechanical movements.
- Groundwork: Before riding, groundwork exercises are often used to establish trust and communication. This can include leading, lunging, or desensitizing the horse to different stimuli.
- Body Awareness: Riders may practice exercises that improve their own body awareness, such as yoga or Pilates, to enhance their balance and coordination.
Horse-centred riding can benefit riders of all levels and disciplines (dressage, jumping, eventing, endurance and so on) by emphasising the emotional as well as physical aspects of the partnership between rider and horse.
